6.4 ATP synthesis

Subsections:
6.4.1 The proton-motive force
6.4.2 ATP synthase

Most of the ATP that results from complete oxidative degradation of glucose is synthesized only after the substrate has already vanished in the form of CO2 and H2O. At this stage, the entire available energy is stored in the so-called proton-motive force across the inner mitochondrial membrane. ATP synthesis is powered by the protons that yield to this force and are pulled back into the mitochondrion.
